“Defying Gravity” from Wicked

There’s so many reasons this song is important to me. First off, this is the first musical I’d ever seen. This is the reason I’d gotten involved with musical theater and singing in the first place. The whole musical was amazing, but this song really got me. It’s what I listen to whenever something doesn’t go exactly how I'd want. Now speaking of things not going how I plan, that’s happened so many times during high school already. If I don’t get a good role in a play or musical, or I get a bad grade on a test, I put in my headphones and blast this into my ears. Though it may not be so great for my hearing, I’ve never found a more effective way of dealing with disappointment. You’re probably wondering why I listen to this song specifically, besides the fact that it’s one of the greatest musical theater anthems of all time. Well, if you really pay attention to the lyrics, which I read through in the lyric video above, it’s really talking about rising above even when other people and things are trying to bring you down. And though I can’t relate to the actual flying part of it or the whole meeting the wizard thing, this is something I need to learn how to do. And by listening to this song it puts me in the mindset of focusing on the bright future ahead instead of the disappointments of the past or present. I just have to move forward and only care about my opinions on what I do, not other peoples.

  1. Wait, You can't fly? I never knew this about you Sydney! But I love what you took out of the song and I definitely think that everyone should move on from the negativity in the past and only care about they do.
