Eric Bublitz

I remember seeing this photo a few months ago. It is of a little girl standing with her father before he is to be deployed. It made me remember something pretty important. That no matter what, these soldiers are still people. They are brothers, sons, fathers, husbands. They are people with ordinary lives outside of the military. It's something you don't really think about, in your mind you almost make soldiers out to be machines. Maybe that's your way of trying to dehumanize them, so that if they do die, you don't think of the children they leave behind.  After doing some research on the image, I discovered that the photographer was the little girl’s mother, the soldiers wife. From her perspective you can see all of the soldiers standing in formation with a very out of place little girl who isn't ready to let her dad go.  In the photo only two figures are really in focus of the camera, all of the others are out of focus. The two people who are in focus are the ones the photographer wants the audience to focus on. They feel that's where there message shines through most, and it does. Partially because you don't see any other children waiting with their parents, but that's beside the point. I feel like the demographic that this photographer is trying to target would be just the average citizen. I feel like this because the photographer is just an ordinary mother and wife who is just trying to show that soldiers are human and not just machines made to do the worlds dirty business.

  1. I love this picture. I also saw it a few months ago. It does have a sad message but the photographer did a great job conveying the message of this picture.
